CAST IRON USE AND CARE GUIDELINES:
- Before the first use; wash, rinse, dry, & season the cast iron pan thoroughly.
- Before cooking, apply vegetable oil to the cooking surface, and preheat the pan on low heat, increase the temperature slowly.
- Make sure to ALWAYS cook in it regularly to avoid buil-up of rust.
- Make sure to ALWAYS season the pan after every use. This will protect your pan from rust spots.
- If the cast iron pan gets rusted, go through a seasoning process.
- Cooking a large amount of acidic food for a long period of time may deteriorate the seasoning of your cast iron pan.
- Stack or hang the pan properly in a dry place.
WHAT IS CAST IRON SEASONING?
Seasoning is a layer of carbonized oil that’s been baked into your cast iron pan, forming a protective layer on top of your cookware. It’s what gives your pan a natural, easy-release finish and makes cooking and cleaning a breeze. The more you cook in your cast iron, the thicker this layer of oil becomes, transforming your pan into an heirloom with smoother and darker cooking surface.
HOW TO SEASON CAST IRON:
Wash your pan
Wash your cast iron pan with warm soapy water. A little soap is okay to use since you’re preparing to season your pan in the oven. Don’t use abrasive and harsh detergents.
Rinse and dry thoroughly
Rinse and dry the pan thoroughly with a clean soft cloth or paper towel. Place it over the stove and heat up to completely remove all the moisture on the inside and outside. Make sure it’s completely dry.
Season with vegetable oil or melted shortening
Season the pan by wiping an ample, thin, & even layer of vegetable cooking oil or melted shortening all throughout the interior and exterior surface using a soft cloth or paper towel.
Bake in the oven for 1 hour
Preheat your oven to 350-450 degrees F / 174-230 degrees C. Place aluminum foil on the bottom rack of the oven to catch any exess oil. Put your cookware upside down as it helps to prevent oil from pooling on the cooking surface.
Cool in the oven
Turn off the heat and allow the cast iron frypan to cook in the oven. This allows the seasoning to further, cure, and adhere to the iron.
